government officials from across the Caribbean at the Meeting and presented a paper under the meeting’s theme “Our Community, Our Museums, Ourselves”.

Hon. Black, Minister of Education and Culture for the British Virgin Islands, told the gathering in Tortola that “Museums play a pivotal role as social institutions that acquire, preserve and protect our natural and cultural heritage. They help us remember who we are, where we have been and assist us in shaping the future.”

Following speakers from BVI, Nevis, St Kitts and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, Nigel Sadler presented a paper entitled “Outreach or Out of Reach?” which

covered the ways in which and the reasons why the Turks and Caicos National Museum was increasing its community involvement. In his presentation the Turks and Caicos National Museum Director cited the Museum Children’s Club, the annual Museum Day celebrations, the new Museum website www.tcmuseum.org and the Astrolabe Newsletter published in Times of the Islands Magazine as good examples of community outreach. In addition he spoke about the importance of the Museum in assisting agencies to fulfil their goals and how a museum also relies on the community as well as key agencies to fulfil its own objectives.

Organisations represented at the conference applauded the efforts of the TCI National Museum and some delegates stated that the work being undertaken in the Turks and Caicos Islands was a good example to follow in their own Home countries.

Commenting on the Presidency of MAC, Nigel Sadler stated “I am delighted that we were elected to lead such a prestigious and instrumental organisation into 2004. I will do my very best to represent the Turks and Caicos National Museum and Museums across the Caribbean region so that our and other institutions can better benefit their communities and future generations.”

Other representatives elected to serve on the MAC Board include Vice President: Larry Armony of Brimstone Hill, St Kitts; Treasurer: Cyril Saltibus of Le Pavillion Royal Museum, St Lucia; Secretary: Pedra Chaffers of St Croix Landmarks Trust. St Croix. Other Board Members include Hazel Brookes of St Kitts, Lisa Harrison of the Institute of Jamaica and Lyne Rose Beuze of the Conseil Regional Martinique and Kim Outten-Stubbs of the Bahamas National Museum.
